A Miami Night in One Evening: Sunset, the Bay and Ocean Drive

A sailing catamaran on the bay at sunset, the skyline low on the horizon

One evening is enough for the best of Miami after dark if you plan it around one fact: the sun sets as early as 5:29pm and as late as 8:16pm, depending on the month. Make each Miami Night reservation with the sunset time in hand, and the rest of the night falls into order. This guide sets out that order for a summer, an autumn and a winter evening.

What time does the evening start?

Work back from sunset. In mid-June the sun sets at 8:14pm and it is fully dark by 8:40pm. In mid-September it sets at 7:25pm, and in mid-December at 5:32pm. So the same evening starts almost three hours earlier in winter than in summer.

The clocks move it too. In 2026 they went forward on 8 March, when sunset jumped from 6:26pm to 7:26pm overnight, and they go back on 1 November, when it drops from 6:40pm to 5:39pm. The sunset times, month by month cover the rest of the year.

Here is how one evening lines up in three seasons.

Where should you be at sunset?

On the water, if you can. The towers light up in the 25 minutes or so between sunset and full dark, and a boat on the bay sees the whole change. Aqua Party Boat's sunset cruise is timed for it, from Pier 3 at Venetian Marina on N Bayshore Drive. It runs 2 hours for $47.20 plus a $10 cash tip a person.

On land, walk the waterfront at Bayside or Bayfront Park next to it. Both face east across the bay, so you watch the towers behind you catch the last light, and the Ferris wheel light up beside the docks.

A cloudy evening changes the plan less than you might think. The towers light up at dusk whatever the sky does, and the lit skyline is the view you came for. Most boats sail rain or shine, and an operator that cancels for bad weather offers a new date or a refund.

Which boat goes first?

Book the boat for the sunset and let everything else follow. From Bayside you can take Fiesta's twilight cruise, about an hour for $25, or Miami Aqua Tours' skyline cruise, 90 minutes for $30. From Venetian Marina there are the sunset and karaoke cruises, and from the Miami River the private boat at the hour you choose.

If the open-bar night cruise is your one boat, pair it with an early dinner rather than the sunset, because it sails after dark. Check in at the Bayside dock 30 minutes early. The meeting points map marks every dock.

Leave time between the dock and your next stop. Bayside is downtown, Venetian Marina is a short ride north on N Bayshore Drive, and Ocean Drive is across the causeway, so allow for a rideshare between them rather than planning back to back.

Can you fit in the 8pm bus?

With a boat before it in winter, yes. The Big Bus night tour leaves Bayside at 8pm and takes 75 to 90 minutes, so you are back by about 9:30pm. In December the sun is down by 5:32pm, so a boat before sunset gets you back in good time.

In June the bus leaves before the sun has set, so ride it first and take a boat after dark. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays a second night bus leaves Soundscape Park in Miami Beach at 8:01pm, handy if you are staying on the beach. Seats are first come, first served, so arrive 15 minutes early.

South Beach before or after?

After, for the neon. The hotels along Ocean Drive, between 5th and 15th Streets, are lit after dark, and they are the reason to go. The Art Deco Historic District around them has about 960 historic buildings and was listed in 1979. The street is free to walk at any hour.

From downtown, take a rideshare across the MacArthur Causeway, or the S or C bus, which Bayside names as the buses to Miami Beach. The Big Bus night tour drives along Ocean Drive without stopping, so if you want to walk it, go on your own. The things to do in the evening list more ideas.

A salsa lesson and the club after?

This is the one plan that fills the whole evening in one place. The salsa night at Mango's starts with your table in the Mojito Room at 900 Ocean Dr from 7:30pm. Bachata is at 8pm, a mojito and bites at 9pm, salsa at 9:20pm, and the club opens at 10pm for 21 and over. It costs $89, and dinner in the room from 7pm is optional.

Pair it with a sunset boat in winter, when the sun is down before 6pm and you have time to cross to the beach. In summer your table at 7:30pm comes before sunset, so choose between the boat and the salsa. Dress for the room: no hats, sleeveless shirts or swimwear, and bring ID.

What about the club night?

The club night starts later still: a rooftop pre-party downtown from 10:30pm to 12:30am with selected drinks, then priority entry to the night's club. You make your own way between the venues, and the dress code is strict.

It is 21 and over, with a passport or photo ID, and there is no refund if the club refuses you entry. Plan a boat and dinner first, and keep the salsa for another night. The what to wear read covers the dress code in full.

What does one evening cost?

Less than you might fear, if you choose one paid thing and walk the rest. The twilight cruise is $25 and the Big Bus $36, while the fountain, the waterfront and Ocean Drive cost nothing. A sunset cruise costs $47.20 plus the $10 cash tip, and the salsa night $89 with a mojito and bites.

A couple doing the sunset cruise and then the salsa night spends $292.40 before dinner and a ride between the two. On the private boat, two people pay $174 with the captain fee, and you bring your own drinks. The guide to night tour prices adds up every option, fees paid on the night included.

Wynwood instead of the water?

For murals and bars rather than the bay, yes, with one catch. The Wynwood Walls museum closes at 6:30pm, so after dark you see the murals on the streets around it, not the ones inside.

The Wynwood pedal pub rides those streets on a pedal bike with a guide who drives, with stops at bars and a cooler for your own drinks. It is 21 and over. The panoramic bus lists Wynwood among its stops, so check the start time on your booking to see whether you arrive before the museum closes.

What about a storm evening in summer?

Plan for one. June is the wettest month at Miami International, with 10.51 inches on average, and every month from May to October averages more than 6 inches. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

If an operator cancels a boat or a bus for bad weather, you are offered a new date or a full refund. Keep a second evening free if you can, and book tours that refund up to 24 hours ahead. The salsa night and the club are indoors, so they carry on whatever the sky does.

How do you get back?

The boats end where they started: Bayside, Venetian Marina or the marina on the Miami River. From Bayside, the Metromover's college/Bayside stop is a block west, and the Brightline station at 600 NW 1st Ave is within walking distance.

The van tour drops you back at your downtown hotel. From the beach, a rideshare is the simple answer. The ATV rides include no transport of their own. For the club, plan a rideshare between the venues and back to your hotel. The what to expect on the night covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I do things in on one evening?
Be on the water at sunset, walk the waterfront or Ocean Drive after dark, and finish with dancing or a late drink. In summer the sun sets after 8pm, so the order starts later.
Should I eat before or after a night cruise?
Before, on most boats: they sell drinks, not meals, and only the true-crime cruise serves bites. On the private boat and the yacht you can bring your own food.
How do I get back after a night tour?
The boats end at the dock they left from, and the van drops you at your downtown hotel. From the beach or the farms, a rideshare is the simple way back.
What time does it get dark in Miami?
Sunset runs from 5:29pm in late November and early December to 8:16pm in late June, and full dark follows about 25 minutes later. The clocks go back on 1 November 2026, which moves sunset an hour earlier overnight, from 6:40pm to 5:39pm.
What time does the Big Bus night tour leave?
At 8pm from Stop #1 at Bayside Marketplace, and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays also at 8:01pm from Soundscape Park in Miami Beach. It is not hop-on hop-off, and seats are first come, first served, so arrive 15 minutes early.
Is the salsa night for beginners?
Yes. Both lessons, bachata at 8pm and salsa at 9:20pm, are beginner classes, and the room is open to all ages until 10pm. After that the Mango's nightclub is 21 and over.
How early should I arrive?
Thirty minutes before for the Miami Aqua Tours cruises at Bayside, 15 to 20 minutes for the Venetian Marina boats and 15 minutes for the Big Bus. The boats leave on time, and a late arrival can miss the sailing.
