Whether a Miami night city tour or a cruise is in the dark depends on the month, not the clock. Sunset moves from 5:29pm in early December to 8:16pm at the end of June, and the weather moves with it. This guide goes month by month, so you book the right hour.

What time is sunset in Miami each month?

The table gives sunset and full dark in the middle of each month for downtown Miami in 2026, from the U.S. Naval Observatory. Full dark is the end of civil twilight, about 25 minutes after sunset. The last three columns show what an 8pm start sees, and the average evening low and rainfall at Miami International.

The earliest sunset of the year is 5:29pm, in late November and early December. The latest is 8:16pm, on 27 June.

When is it dark on the 8pm bus?

From mid-September through March, the Big Bus night tour leaves in full dark. In April, May and August it leaves at dusk, with the towers lighting up as you go. From mid-June to mid-July the sun sets at 8:14pm, after the bus has left, so the first part of the ride is daylight.

On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays a second night bus leaves Soundscape Park in Miami Beach at 8:01pm, so the same months apply if you board on the beach. Seats on both are first come, first served, and you should arrive 15 minutes early.

The bus runs 75 to 90 minutes, so even in June it ends in the dark. If the dark is the point, though, book it between September and March. The night city tours page compares it with the other buses and the van.

Which months give you a sunset from the bay?

Every month, if the boat leaves at the right time. The sunset cruise from Venetian Marina moves with the sun, so check the time on your booking for your date. A fixed 7pm boat is a different story: it sails in full dark from November to February, and in daylight from May to August.

In March, April and September a 7pm boat catches the sunset in its first half hour, and in October it leaves at dusk. The private boat avoids the question, because you pick the hour: aim for half an hour before sunset.

How does the clock change move the tours?

By an hour, overnight. In 2026 the clocks went forward on 8 March: sunset was 6:26pm on 7 March and 7:26pm the next day. They go back on 1 November: 6:40pm on 31 October, 5:39pm on 1 November.

The boats and buses keep their clock times, so the light at a given hour jumps. A 6pm sailing leaves in daylight on 31 October and after sunset on 1 November. A tour booked months ahead will not warn you, so check sunset for your date.

What does hurricane season mean for a night tour?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Its peak is 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. An average season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

A storm nearby can cancel boats and buses. In those months, book with free cancellation and keep a spare evening.

What happens when a storm cancels?

If an operator cancels a boat or a bus for bad weather, you are offered a new date or a full refund. Most tours here also refund in full if you cancel yourself at least 24 hours ahead.

A cancellation can come on the day itself, so give the operator a phone number you will answer, and check your messages before you set out. If the weather looks doubtful and your tour refunds up to 24 hours ahead, decide the day before rather than on the dock.

The LED kayak is the exception to watch, because its terms contradict each other. The salsa night and the club are indoors, so a storm does not stop them. The what to expect on the night has the rest.

When is the wettest month?

June, with 10.51 inches on average at Miami International, and September close behind at 10.22. Every month from May to October averages more than 6 inches. January is the driest, at 1.83 inches.

From November to April each month averages less than 3.6 inches, which is why that is the season most visitors choose. The top deck of the bus is open, so bring a light rain jacket in summer.

Which months are coolest after dark?

December to March, when the average evening low at the airport sits below 66°F. January is the coolest, at 61°F. In July and August the low stays near 78°F, so a summer night on the bay is warm even after dark.

The sunset and weather by month gives each month in more detail. The what to wear read turns it into a packing list.

Is it cool on the water in winter?

Cooler than on land. A moving boat adds a breeze, and in January the evening low averages 61°F, so bring a light jacket or a layer. The sunset cruise lists shaded seating, and the skyline cruise has a lower deck under its open upper one.

On the Big Bus's open top deck in winter, the wind is part of the ride. The van and the panoramic bus are enclosed, which makes them the warmer choice on a cool night.

Are there seasonal specials?

Yes, on the true-crime cruise. On select weekends before Halloween it adds a costume-party option, so late October is when to book it if you like dressing up. The cruise tells documented history, with a live host and a digital case file of archive photos.

Fares change with the season too, and promotional fares come and go. The guide to night tour prices adds up what each costs.

What is an evening like in each season?

Winter, December to February. The sun sets between 5:32pm and 6:14pm, so you are in the dark before dinner. Evening lows average 64°F to 63°F, the rain is light, and any evening tour is a night tour. Bring a layer for the water.

Spring, March to May. The clocks go forward in March, and sunset jumps to about 7:30pm. Lows climb from 66°F to 73°F. May brings the first heavy rain, at 6.32 inches, so book with free cancellation from then on.

Summer, June to August. Sunset comes after 8pm in June and July, and lows stay near 78°F. You get long, warm evenings and the wettest weeks of the year. Book a later sailing if you want the dark, and keep a spare evening for the storms.

Autumn, September to November. The dark comes earlier each week, and the clocks go back on 1 November. September is wet and at the peak of hurricane season, while November is drier and cooler, with lows of 68°F.

When should you book?

As soon as your dates are fixed. Most tours here refund in full up to 24 hours ahead, so booking early costs you nothing if the weather turns. Check the sunset for your date first, then pick the sailing that puts you on the water at the hour you want.

Which month is best?

November to April, for most visitors. It is dark early, by 5:56pm in mid-November and 6:16pm in mid-January. The evenings are cooler, the rain is lighter and the hurricane season is over.

If you come in summer, the evenings are warm and long. Book later sailings for the dark, keep a spare evening for the storms, and use the sunset time for your date.
